Well, its been one day shy of five weeks since surgery, recovery is slow but it's getting better as the days go on.
I wanted to write this particular blog to let you know some things I wish I had known before the surgery and about the recovery process and some advice from me that might also help you!
Let's start off with some questions to ask your surgeon:
1. How long is the surgery
2. How long is the hospital stay
3. What should I expect in the coming days?
4. What are the types of surgery offered to me? Da Vinci, Laparoscopic, Abdominal, or vaginal.
5. Can I have my prescriptions filled before my surgery day?
6. How do you plan to expel the extracted organs?
7. How soon can I do normal daily things after surgery?
8. What types of over the counter medications should I expect to need?
9. Will you be gluing, stitching or stapling my incisions.
10. What should I expect in the hours leading up to my surgery?
I also suggest you make a list of questions you want to know, we seem to have a thousand, and then we enter the exam room, and it's like our minds draw a blank.
Next, let us talk about what you might want to purchase to help to recover a little bit easier:
1. Stool softeners, pain medicine, can be very constipating, and you absolutely do not want to strain!
2. Comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off. Bending and tugging are not going to be easy!
3. Quick cook meals, or even better MEAL PREP! This will make those dinners come together so much easier
4. Squatty Potty, this will make the going process so much easier.
5. Antibacterial soap, My surgeon suggested I shower using antibacterial soap before and after surgery to reduce the risk of infection.
6. GasX, the gas pains are by far the worst part of recovery!
7. Ice packs, these will help reduce inflammation in your belly, plus if you are like me and dealing with hot flashes, they will quickly become your best friend.
8. A small pillow to hold on belly when you feel a cough or sneeze coming on.
Wondering what you should bring to the hospital with you, well this section will help with that!
1. Comfortable clothing
2. Pads, spotting is a normal part of recovery and if you don't want to use the hospital pads bring your own.
3. Chapstick, hospital rooms can be so drying
4. An extra-long phone charger, who knows how far the closest outlet will be. I suggest 10ft.
5. Slip-on shoes, trust me; it just makes life easier.
6. Hard candy or gum to help with the dry, irritated throat.
I hope this blog helps some of you who are about to enter the world of uterus eviction! Stay tuned I have lots more planned! Comment below if you have any other questions and I will try my best to find some answers for you!
